| Welcome Message |
“Patriot Dream”by Renae Allen, this month’s star on Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show.
Dear Quilters,
Training wheels are a good thing for learning to ride a bicycle, so why not use them for learning free-motion quilting?
In the case of longarm quilting, “training wheels” are pre-printed panels and tools that help build coordination and muscle memory – not to mention confidence!
This month’s guest on Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show has develop a set of tools that help longarmers make the leap from guided quilting to free-motion work. Renae Allens’ Skillbuilders start out in almost follow-the-dot style for beginners, then builds skills and confidence to creating one’s own designs.
Whether you’re a beginner or further along but wanting to improve your skills, you are sure to learn a lot of this month’s show.
Happy quilting,
Jodie

Episode #309
Skill Builders for Free-Motion Quilting Renae Allen
Longarm teacher Renae Allen realized that her students needed a project before the project so they could build on basic skills. They needed to learn the rhythm, the motion, the repetitive motion and the motor skills of longarm stitching. She developed Skill Builders, a fabric printed with all kinds of lines to use as a stitching guide. Arrows and numbers show the thread path minimizing stops and starts. Renae demonstrates using the Versa Tool by Handi Quilter to make smooth lines. And for the person who can’t stand to throw anything away, she shows a large tote bag made by using the fabric with a pretty backing.
