Peacock Rug by Marion Sachs

Wheel of Life was designed and quilted by Jamie Wallen, well known quilt artist, designer, international teacher and longarm quilter.

Dear Quilters,

Did you know that you can watch Fons & Porter’s “Love of Quilting” right here on Yes, you can! And the best part is that you can watch any time you wish!

The 1700 series has just been added to our huge library. Here are a few of my favorite shows from the series:

In episode 1712  Linda Rainwater joins Marianne Fons to make something every quilter needs. Linda shows how she used supplies from the hardware store to make a handy – and handsome – sewing caddy. They start with mesh screening!

Daughter Mary Fons joins Marianne in episode 1709 to show how to make perfect points with a special tool and a block with 73 pieces. Seventy-three no less!

Mary and Marianne demonstrate foundation piecing to make Nancy Mahoney’s fabulous Pineapple Salsa quilt on show 1707.

Enjoy all thirteen shows in the 1700 series!

Happy quilting,

Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show

Episode #307
It’s All About the Thread
Heather Purcell

Heather Purcell, a.k.a. Mother Superior, joins Jodie to tell us all about threads, specifically Superior Threads which she owns with her husband Bob. In the first segment, Heather tells us why the strong core of Superior metallic keeps it from fraying and breaking as other brands do and she adds helpful hints for perfect stitching. Next up, quilts stitched with Rainbow threads with a 1” color change. Then, the ever-useful Superior MonoPoly invisible thread which is made from monofilament polyester.

In the second segment Heather Purcell shows Jodie a lovely red silk quilt that is quilted with Superior’s silk thread. A wool batting by Hobbs makes everything puff up beautifully. Next up is Omni, a good-for-everything workhorse thread. Heather then shows us the latest from Superior, Magnifico, a 40 weight thread with lots of sheen that comes in 200 colors.

In Short Takes on Longarm Quilting Vicki Hoth addresses quilt backing options. She shows busy and plain backings, pieced backings and even cuddly soft quilt backs for children’s quilts.

Jodie couldn’t wait to try Superior’s metallic thread at the Handi Quilter longarm machine. Sure enough, unlike others she has tried: no frays, no breaks! Heather Purcell suggests investing in thread cards made with the actual thread for choosing thread colors. Then she discusses the difference between 40 weight and 50 weight threads. Her company is all about education and invites viewers to Superior University, a monthly free class you can sign up for online.

Episode #404
Similar and Different

Jodie and Mark show their latest rug hooking project and talk about Mark’s doorknock, Marion Sachs, who is a master at both rug hooking and quilting. Then Jodie does a “how to” demonstration showing how advanced features of today’s machines make stitching a buttonhole applique stitch a snap.

Quilter and rug hooker extraordinaire Marion Sachs of York, Pennsylvania is Mark’s doorknock subject this month. Marion’s magnificent quilts are hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted although she’s not averse to using the sewing machine. Enjoy the show and tell!

Marion Sachs shows Mark some of her fabulous hooked rugs. Marion demonstrates how easy it is to hook using her favorite $6 tool and shows how she dyes wool strips for maximum shading. And, oh yes, just like quilters if you are a rug hooker you will have a stash.

Then, Jodie and Mark review Easy and Fun Free Motion Quilting: Frames, Fillers, Hundreds of Ideas by Eva A. Larkin and show two lovely quilts from the book.
