Welcome Message

This detail is from Mr. Bennett’s Neighbors, a quilt design by Patti Connor, this month’s multi-talented guest on Quilting Celebrations with Patrick Lose.

Dear Quilters,

Great news! Iowa Public Television has made the "Quilts of Valor" documentary available to all Public Television affiliate stations, with a scheduled "feed date" of May 22. Just because it’s available doesn’t mean that they will air it. We quilters need to ask for it!

"Quilts of Valor" is a 73-minute documentary starring national quilters Eleanor Burns, Alex Anderson, and my buddy Mark Lipinski, and is hosted by Marianne Fons. When Mark returned from the taping he told me it was an amazing experience, and it has lived up to that sentiment in the final product. To make sure this unique and compelling program is aired on your local station, contact your station's programming department and ask them to schedule the show.

Watch the opening section of the show here. Be sure to have tissue hand!

Happy quilting,

Episode 214
For the Love of Feathers: Designs and Quilt with Longarm Quilter Judy Allen

Feathers are the crowning jewel of hand quilting. In this episode Judy Allen shows you how to draft your own feather designs to fit your quilt top and to stitch them out using curved rulers to make negotiating those curve a cake walk.

First, Judy shows how easy it is to draft our own designs using various sizes of circle templates, including straight lines, curves, mirror images, etc. You can create designs to custom feather your quilts! Then Judy Allen puts her beautiful feather designs onto the quilt top. She uses a series of paisley-shaped rulers to guide her stitching along the marked lines insuring accuracy.

In Short Takes on Longarm Quilting Vicki Hoth shows Jodie a couple of ways to transfer quilting designs such as Judy’s feathers to your quilt top using Golden Threads paper.

Judy organizes her patterns by digitizing them with the Art and Stitch software program which allows her to draw from scratch or take a photograph and turn that into a design. See just how easy it is to draw a pattern, make corrections, and play with the design.

Have you ever put your own spin on a pattern you loved? Take this adorable Asian-inspired dress for example. We love the original pattern from Modkid, by Patty Young, and thought it was a perfect candidate for some Sashiko stitching.  By adding decorative Sashiko stitching to some of the skirt panels, and the edges of the belt and ribbon, we gave an already adorable pattern a completely original twist!
