Welcome Message

May Flowers is another colorful project from Patrick Lose's of’s own Quilting Celebrations show. Patrick’s designs use bright fabrics and simple techniques for high impact results.

Dear Quilters,

Some people are so, so clever, coming up with great new ideas or ways to do things. Some people are born to teach. Some people are both. Patrick Lose’ guest this month, Susan Cleveland, combines both of these attributes.

I remember several years ago seeing her present a demo of her techniques to a classroom and was entranced by her easy step-by-step explanation. It was like she was feeding me the information just as my brain was able to absorb it, and answered my questions as soon as I thought them. Yes, she’d taught it many times and knew how student’s brains were working: skill and experience.

Watch Susan on this month’s Quilting Celebrations. You’ll be adding piping and prairie points to you projects—or choosing projects to add them to!

On the subject of teaching, I rarely do so these days, but since I’ll be in Raleigh, North Carolina in June for the Quilters Take Raleigh event (Come participate in the first ever “Go Tell It At the Quilt Show”!) the organizers invited me to teach a three-hour evening class on paper piecing, both straight and curved. I always love the challenge of showing those who have tried and didn’t “get” it before how a few little guidelines take the thinking out of it and, bring on the precision!

Take the class, take in the show and the special event, or just find me at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo and say hi!

Happy quilting,

P.S. Did you notice that now new videos for all of our shows are free for the first week after the premiere? Yes, so invite your friends to check out! Of course members still have access to all of the 1,000-plus videos all day everyday!

Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show

Episode 301 - Combining Two Passions
Jennifer Day

Jennifer Day is an ASID Interior Designer, photographer and goldsmith. Since 2010 she has added Art Quilting to her repertoire, with quilts that have taken the show scene by storm by combining two passions – photography and quilting – in her distinctive style.

To prepare a photograph for printing Jennifer imports the photo into her computer. Using Photoshop, she “posterizes” the photo so she can see where all the colors go. She then has her local print shop print her high resolution photograph printed paper-backed Jacquard Inkjet Fabric. Next she chooses the thread colors for the stitching. She uses Superior Thread, preferring the matte finish for most of her thread painting.

Episode 310 - The Amish Touch

Jodie and Mark open the show from the Amish section of the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia. Taking time from a little “food research” the duo shows new products for easy quilting and organization and show a video in which a new rotary ruler is tested by both a non-sewer and a seasoned quilter to see if it really works.

Jannekenn Schmucker is Mark’s doorknock guest this month. Jannekenn is a quilt academic with a PHD in Amish quilts to prove it. She shows Mark her quilt collection including ones she has made.

Janneken and Jodie show how to use the Quilt Index, a project of the Alliance for American Quilts. This is a tremendous resource with over 60,000 quilts available to view and best of all, it’s free.

Back at the Reading Terminal Market, Jodie and Mark do their book reviews (this month featuring appliqué) and show quilts from the books.
