Swan’s Journey by Lisa Calle

Swan’s Journey by Lisa Calle showcases her “divide and design” technique to beautifully quilt those dreaded blank areas of a quilt.

Dear Quilters,

Quilters get a major charge out of helping a newbie along. We love showing them a technique and seeing that light bulb go off. And introducing them to the goodies that make quilting so fun. Oh the discovery!

Better yet, how about a twelve year old quilter? This week on Quilty Mary Fons introduces us to Sophie who just made her first quilt. It all started when her grandmother suggested she make one for the Quilts of Valor project.

Mary’s Mom, Marianne, spearheads a mentoring project, Under Our Wings, through quilt shops that pairs new quilters with a quilter who will guide his or her student through the making of a Quilt of Valor. Brilliant idea. And this is exactly how Sophie made her quilt.

Happy quilting,

Episode 212 - Divide and Design
Lisa Calle

There’s a serious affliction affecting many quilters. It’s Quilting Agoraphobia, the fear of facing wide open spaces on the quilt. Happily, there is a simple solution. Divide and design, and Lisa Calle shows us how. Starting with a blank block, she shoots a black and white photo and prints it out. Using a pencil and her circle and arc tools she begins drawing a pattern on overlays. By adding overlays the design becomes more intricate. If when she quilts she finds there’s too much empty space Lisa simply divides and designs some more. Using this approach the most simple of quilts can be turned into a work of art.

In Short Takes on Longarm Quilting Vicki Hoth addresses another quilter’s phobia, Tension Phobia, and proves that knowledge is the cure. When the tension is correct the stitching looks the same on both the front and back sides.

Episode 309 - Quiltsperation

Jodie and Mark invite you into the Newark Museum, a little gem located in New Jersey with an extensive, impressive quilt collection. Longarm guru Linda Taylor shares tips on quilting log cabin blocks.

Mark’s “doorknock” is Ulysses Grant Dietz (yes, he’s related), curator of the Newark Museum collections. Browse the exhibit with Mark and Ulysses. Jaw-droppers include a silk 1880’s log cabin crazy quilt made of narrow strips and an unfinished grandmother’s flower garden top with the paper patterns still in place. A Luke Haynes quilt gives the exhibit a contemporary spin.

Jodie catches Marti Michell at Quilt Market with her block of the month quilt featuring Northcott fabrics from the Stonehenge collection which is coming to a quilt shop near you. Back at the Newark Museum, Jodie and Mark do their monthly book review and show quilts from the books along with some other surprises.

Quilting Celebrations

Episode 201 - Sashiko!

It’s a new season of Quilting Celebrations with Patrick Lose and Patrick has a new “toy”. He’s always been a fan of hand-stitched embellishment on his applique projects and now Baby Lock has a machine that produces the same look in a fraction of the time for those who aren’t as fond of stitching by hand. He’s designed a cute Easter Bunny placemat for this episode and he’ll show you how the Sashiko machine can add even more character to it. In the first segment, Patrick has invited guest Kay Capps-Cross back to his studio to play with the machine and the two will show examples of what they were able to accomplish with it and talk a little bit about the art of traditional Japanese Sashiko.

In segment two, Kay joins Patrick at the Sashiko machine and demonstrates just how easy it is to learn and use the machine to create Sashiko quilting or to simply embellish an already-quilted project.

In the third segment, Patrick takes his turn at the machine to easily embellish the round Easter Bunny placemat he designed especially for this episode. You’ll be amazed at what the Sashiko machine can do. Happy Easter and Happy Quilting from Quilting Celebrations with Patrick Lose!
