Star Quilt by Nellie Two Bulls

Tied Center Medallion Quilt (80" x 72") circa 1925 by an unknown African American quilter is part of the Newark Museum’s extensive quilt collection.

Dear Quilters,

It’s hard to imagine that this unseasonably warm weather is happening so early in the year, but it’s already so hot in Georgia that I’m thinking about my summer hibernation projects. You see, usually, it’s like fall here all winter, and the summer…it’s just too blasted hot and humid to be outside! Therefore, I turn the idea of hibernation on its head and do it in air conditioning.

This week Mary Fons creates a spin-off on a basic star block by showing us how to make a coffee brown Free Trade block. The center is a four patch, two patches of which are half-square triangles, inside an Ohio Star. Watch her sew and you’ll be ready to make gazoodles of Fair Trade Blocks!

Be sure to look for more Blocks a Go-Go episodes here on It’s a regular feature on Quilty and a great way to learn to make a new block. You can make many of the same block and sew them into a quilt or go the all-out route and make one of each and create a sampler quilt. That’s a great way to increase your skill level.

Oh, I so look forward to quilting hibernation. Come on Georgia heat!

Happy quilting,
