Star Quilt by Nellie Two Bulls

Star Quilt by Nellie Two Bulls (Sioux) of Pine Ridge, South Dakota is part of the Newark Museum’s extensive quilt collection.

Dear Quilters,

Ready to see some fabulous quilts? Then be sure to catch this month’s episode of Quilt Out Loud! Mark’s doorknock is on the door of the Newark Museum, seemingly an unlikely locale for what we found behind those doors. Even our crew, who are from the area, said, “Newark, a museum, really?”

Well, wait until you see the quilts, each more fabulous than the other. And to top it off, I was astounded to turn a corner at the terminus of the exhibit to find Luke Haynes’s take off on American Gothic. Luke grounds his quilts in traditional patchwork, from which they take flight to become totally today. This acquisition puts him in the (well-deserved) company of some amazing quilts. Yeah Luke!

Enjoy all of this month’s quiltspiration!

Happy quilting,

Episode 212 - Divide and Design
Lisa Calle

Week Two
Lisa Calle shows us the simple technique of Divide and Design in action. She starts with a blank block, shoots a black and white photo, and prints it out. Using a pencil and her circle and arc tools she begins drawing a pattern on overlays. By adding overlays the design becomes more intricate.

Quick Takes in Longarm Quilting with Vicki Hoth

Vicki addresses another quilter’s phobia, Tension Phobia, and proves that knowledge is the cure. When the tension is correct the stitching looks the same on both the front and back sides. Rule #1 is to always start correcting with the bobbin tension. When the bobbin tension is right it’s simple to correct the top tension.

Episode 309 - Quiltsperation

Week Two
Mark’s “doorknock” is Ulysses Grant Dietz (yes, he’s related), curator of the Newark Museum collections. Browse the exhibit with Mark and Ulysses. Jaw-droppers include a silk 1880’s log cabin crazy quilt made of narrow strips and an unfinished grandmother’s flower garden top with the paper patterns still in place. A Luke Haynes quilt gives the exhibit a contemporary spin. Quiltsperation indeed!
