Dear Quilting Friends,

Photo of JodieMark and I have conjured up a double whammy for the quilters—make that “targets”—Mark surprises on the Quilt Out Loud! door knock segments. I wait in the wings and then, just when they think they are finished with Mark’s shenanigans, the suggestion is posed that they show me what they are working on by doing an impromptu how-to segment.

Mark is forever hopeful that he’ll find his door knock subject in a bathrobe and rollers. As for me, I know all designers can switch on teaching mode at a moment’s notice, so I don’t know what the just-out-of-the-shower equivalent is for me. Have fabric, will sew!

Our first double team “victim”, Gudrun Erla, didn’t miss a beat. A table runner she was working on for her latest was book ready to go. She disappeared into her studio while the camera guys regrouped, and suddenly we were sewing! It’s a super cute table runner that is perfect for a gift.

From reading her blog, it’s obvious that Gudrun enjoyed the visit, and has forgiven us for barging in the day they were saying farewell to her parents as they were leaving to go home to Iceland. Now that’s a good sport!

Quilt Out Loud! August Episode

Segment 3: Project with Gudrun Erla

While Mark barged in on Gudrun and her family, Jodie waited in the wings. The interview finished, Jodie asked Gudrun if she had a project in the works to share with Quilt Out Loud! viewers. Gudrun demonstrates a holiday table runner from her newest book, “Fast and Furious.” This quilt-as-you-go rick rack runner is perfect for beginners.

Segment 4: Quiltspiration

Jodie and Mark join a group of knitters in the shop’s classroom as they knit hats for homeless teenagers. As the pile in the center of the table builds, Jodie and Mark present the Scandinavian-inspired blocks they created.

Segments 5 and 6: Book Review and Scandinavian Products at Ingebretson’s

The store is filled with inspiration, and the location for the book review is way in the back. So what started as just a book review ended up being much more. Mark and Jodie plopped themselves on the floor in the book nook with their arms and baskets full of delights they had found in the shop and just had to share.

Quilt It! The Long Arm Quilting Show

August’s Episode: Jamie Wallen's “From the Drawing Board to the Quilt”

Segment 2

Quilt It - Segment 2

Jamie works on his Hearts Take Flight design, showing how the time he spent practicing on paper sets him up for success at the longarm. Jamie suggests setting the machine for 12 stitches to the inch and a regulated stitch so the stitches keep up with your movements, making you the boss.

Short Takes on Longarm Quilting with Vicki Hoth - Batting

Quilt It - Short Takes

It’s all about batting! With more choices on the market all the time, how do you know which is the best batting for your quilt? Vicki discusses choosing the correct batting for your project. First, ask yourself three questions. From there decide amongst the many content and loft choices. Vicki shows Jodie sample quilts to better understand her choices.

Segment 3

Quilt It - Segment 3

Jamie stitches out his Fusion Dragonfly. The body is made from couched eyelash yarn which he sews down on the longarm. Using YLI thin metallic thread he stitches in the wings, then adds texture lines to give a web look to the upper wings and a pebble design to the lower. A few tendrils, and the butterfly flies on the quilt!
