Dear Quilting Friends,
The most wonderful thing about life is the people (Yes, cats do come second, I think) and the best of the best are quilters. If you are a quilter you have friends everywhere. I met a new one as soon as I got on the shuttle bus at the Salt Lake City Airport when we taped the first three episodes of Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show.
Here’s what Jamie says in his bio on his web site:
“Jamie Wallen entered the Quilting Community with a background in Fine Arts. After a long arm purchase in the late nineties he began to develop his own style of quilting. During this time he developed a large and loyal community of piecers throughout the United States that "wanted him to put his unique style of work on their quilts." Eventually, he began mentoring new quilters in his area. It was during this period that he met and became friends with Nichole Webb with whom he collaborated and released the book "No Boundaries" which includes Jamie's TM design "Flurry Of Angels." In 2004, Jamie began teaching workshops and classes throughout the US. In 2005, Jamie began "Heading back to his roots of Fine Art "WITH" the long arm." He has developed a new series of quilting techniques he calls "Thread fusion," and continues to teach nationally. 2005 also brought Jamie into a new Studio where he works and teaches workshops in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Jamie is presently also collaborating with Fine Artist Patrick Whalen on original hand dyed artist's cloth for long arm quilters use in artist's whole cloths. As Jamie says "I've found my home in the quilting community, and I'm going to explore 'every' room.”
Jamie is our star on this month’s Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show. I hope you enjoy getting to know him as much as I have! Watch Jamie’s episode!

Segment 2: Doorknock: Gudrun Erla
Mark and the camera crew travel to Chanhassen, Minnesota to surprise Gudrun Erla at her home and studio. As luck would have it, her mother and father were visiting from Iceland. Gudrun loves quick and easy projects, which can be finished in a short period of time. Her
friends call her the shortcut expert!

Quilt It! The Long Arm Quilting Show
August’s Episode: Jamie Wallen's “From the Drawing Board to the Quilt”

Before he steps up to his longarm machine, Jamie Wallen first draws the design on paper, then practices the motions by tracing the movements with a pen, establishing the hand-eye coordination that will translate directly when he starts sewing the design on the longarm machine.
Segment 1

Jamie demonstrates his tip for establishing muscle memory by practicing free-motion designs on paper before stepping up to the longarm. Free-motion quilting requires brain hand coordination and this drawing helps us “remember” the pattern.
