Vol 5, Issue 11

Dear Quilting Friends,

Photo of JodieCan you believe this quilt is paper pieced? This is one of my most favorite quilts that I have designed.

The flowers are paper pieced in strips and then sewn together. None of that insert seam business that comes with traditional Grandmother’s Flower Garden hexagons. Nope, with my method you just sew on the line and they come out perfectly.

And get this: the leaves are paper pieced too, using my curved paper-piecing method. It’s easy!

How would you like to join me in a class to make your own Grandmother’s Daisy Garden? I’ll be teaching the class at the end of September just outside of Chicago. It’s part of an exciting event, Quilting Together, which is jam-packed with fun and great freebies. Join me in Illinois!

Happy quilting,
Jodie

Quilt It! The Long Arm Quilting Show

July’s Episode: Renae Haddadin's “Renae’s Bag of Tricks”

Quilt It - Segment 1

This quilt quickly turns into a fun bag with pull of the drawstrings. For July's segment of Quilt It! The Longarm Show Renae will share how she made this bag using Renae's Mini Rays, arc templates, YLI's metallic threads and a HandiQuilter longarm machine.  The pattern is easy to follow by drawing a few circles and adding a few radiating lines.  Connect the dots with the acrylic arcs to form curved crosshatching.  Heavy threads used in the bobbin make the bag a real eye catcher.

The pattern for Renae’s Bag of Tricks is available on the Quilt It! The Longarm Quilting Show web site, click on Episode Notes.

Segment 2

Quilt It - Segment 2

Renae begins quilting her bag by stitching stabilizing lines in her design, using the marking lines she drew in the first segment. She explains why the different sewing modes on the Handi Quilter help her in various situations, such as when using templates or doing fill-in work. Then, she shows what magic templates can do as she uses them to stitch a striking spirograph-like design.

Segment 3

Quilt It - Segment 3

With her design set, Renae now sets about adding detail. She switches to a fine metallic thread for some curved cross hatching, which she then fills in with micro fill-ins. She explains why she uses cruise control at this stage. Next, she flips the quilt and switches to ribbon floss by YLI in her bobbin (and 40 weight YLI machine quilting thread as her top thread) and stitches at 8 stitches per inch for her outline stitching which defines the bag.

Aunt Grace Authentices

Aunt Grace Reproductions
As close to a real 1930's quilt as you can get!
The piecing is easier than it was back then, though, because it's all made with rotary-cut squares, which are turned into half-square triangles.

The fabrics are by Judie Rothermel, who did her first Aunt Grace reproduction line in 1991.
