Vol 5, Issue 11

Dear Quilting Friends,

Photo of JodieLet me introduce you to an amazing quilter…

Imagine starting to make quilts at sixty and having them end up in a museum! Hortense Horton Beck, of Topeka, Kansas, did just that.

Inspired by a deep love of history, Hortense painstakingly recreated quilt patterns from a variety of museum collections, including reproductions of two quilts in the International Quilt Study Center and Museum Collection. One of Mrs. Beck's most remarkable reproductions, the famous “Reconciliation Quilt” is copied from an original created by Lucinda Ward Honstain which was made shortly after the American Civil War.

In our May episode of Quilt Out Loud Susan Neil of the Atlanta History Center showed Mark Lipinski a photograph of a reproduction of The Bible Quilt. Many quilts are so valuable that the public rarely gets to see them. But reproductions are another matter. Mrs. Beck donated her reproduction of the Reconciliation Quilt to the International Quilt Study Center & Museum, designating it for use in the museum’s education collection. Quilts “earmarked” in this way may be displayed in a broader range of exhibition conditions and allows the museum to share the quilts with public audiences beyond the walls of its own museum or other museums and galleries. How’s that for a quilter giving back?!

How’s this for cool tools and a hot summer deal…

A while back I taped a segment with John Brady of Guidelines4Quilting called the Ultimate Stashbuster. Using their unique Seam Allowance Additions, John cut squares and half- and quarter-square triangles using just one measurement line on the Guidelines Ruler. Then we just played with the pieces, arranging them into different classic quilt blocks. What a fun, easy, no-math way to use up some of your stash.

Well, since then, their system has gotten even better. The Additions are now color-coded and are more precise than using any quilt ruler alone. Many of you may be surprised to know this, but the amounts you add for half and quarter square triangles on a ruler are wrong. Click here to see what the exact measurements are and how Seam Allowance Additions solve that problem, and watch some animations, explaining how the new color-coding makes it even easier. Also, check out the Ultimate Stashbuster video below. Take advantage of this Sizzling Special and Save 20%.

Now I’m revved to finish my block for the Quiltspiration segment we’re taping next weekend for an upcoming show. I wonder what Mark’s going to come up with... I didn’t know how to react when I saw his block at our taping for the August show. You’ll have to wait to see what I mean!

Happy quilting,
Jodie

Quilt Out Loud! June Episode

Segment 3: Door Knock

First thing in the morning, Mark took off in Jodie’s truck to knock on Jodie’s bee buddy Jennifer Yacola’s door. Another northerner turned southerner, Jennifer wows her Bee friends with every new quilt she makes. And she wowed Mark. She numbers each quilt she makes and calls them “practice quilts” which is why Jodie wanted Mark to meet her. Each one is hand quilted, from her original Mariner’s Compass design to her needle turn appliqué album quilt. “Practice” quilts? You be the judge!

Segment 4: North Meets South: Sampling Drinks

Jodie spirits Mark away from quilting to her favorite restaurant, Milton’s, in the quaint town of Milton, Georgia. There Katherine DeSantis, bar tender extraordinaire, mixes up signature drinks from the south and then from the north for the duo to sample. Find out which ones they liked and which received a thumbs down.

Segment 6: It’s a Birthday Party! And Book Review, Gifts to Make

Mark and Jodie celebrate their birthdays at Jodie’s kitchen table, review books with great gift projects, and exchange their own gifts to one another. Alas, they are in fact loved, and don’t end up spending their birthday party alone. Three of Jodie’s friends from boot camp arrive to celebrate the occasion!

Quilt It! The Long Arm Quilting Show

June’s Episode: Suzanne Michelle Hyland's “How to Choose Quilting Designs”

Quilting makes the quilt! The problem is, with limitless possibilities for quilting, how do you choose a design? Suzanne Hyland joins Jodie in the studio to walk through the thought process she uses when she examines a quilt and decides upon the best route to take with her quilting. She starts by asking some basic questions.

Segment Two

Quilt It - Segment 2

Now that we have a general idea of what we wish to do, how do you know what quilt pattern to use, and what about placement? Suzanne uses Quilters Preview Paper to audition her designs, and then stitches them out to test them with real thread-without committing to them!

In Short Takes on Longarm Quilting, Vicki Hoth turns her attention to the often neglected back of quilts. She offers tips for choosing backing fabrics, shows how to seam a quilt, and how you can make a quilt for the back by piecing quilt backings.

Segment Three

Quilt It - Segment 3

Using quilt tops borrowed from friends, Suzanne walks viewers through her decision-making process in choosing quilting designs, textures, patterns, and thread for each top. She shows which elements she wishes to accentuate and which call for unifying, and gives options for backgrounds.
