Dear Quilting Friends,

Goodness Kimmy, that’s a stunning quilt! Here’s how Kimmy described her quilt when she sent the photos to me:

”When beginning this project, there were only two rules; I wanted plenty of space for my freehand feather designs and I wanted to play with adding piping to my piecing. I started out with a free block pattern from the McCall’s quilting site and just winged the rest from there. Originally, the plan was that this would be a sweet rose pink and crisp white bed sized quilt, but that plan fizzled when I walked into the quilt shop and saw the fun new Christmas fabrics. I decided that, since pink and white do not exactly fit a house in which there are two dogs that spend their entire lives sleeping on the bed and spraying hair all over everything, it would probably be a lot smarter to go with a Christmas wallhanging instead. Superior Threads ‘So Fine’ was used as the top thread, with ‘Bottom Line’ in the bobbin. I prefer this combination because it allows me to quilt very densely while still ending up with a soft quilt that drapes nicely and is not stiff. Hobb’s Wool batting was chosen for its ability to give beautiful definition and loft without stiffness, even when heavily quilted.”

I met Kimmy for the first time on the set of our new show this past weekend. I am sworn to secrecy about it until the announcement March 1. But hey, you might put two-and-two together…

Now that I’m home from taping those first episodes of the new series it’s back to planning new episodes of Quilt Out Loud! We’ll be taping two in March, with Mark back from his escapades to join me for the May and June episodes. In the meantime, Rob Appell will be debuting in March as my co-host for the March and April shows. Goodness—that will wrap up the first year of Quilt Out Loud!

Happy quilting,
Jodie Davis

Quilt Out Loud! from Iowa

Segment 3: Surprise Visit to the Love of Quilting Taping

Jodie and Mark arrive at the Iowa Public Broadcasting Studios to surprise Liz Porter on the set of Love of Quilting. Before they enter the building, Jodie and Mark swap stories about their first time on television. Then, they make their way through the backrooms of the building, and pop out of the dark while Liz is taping the show. After a quick greeting Liz invites Jodie to stay and help her on the show, and sends Mark off to the control room.

Segment 4 Mark’s Interview With Liz Porter

Mark interviews Liz Porter on the set of Love of Quilting, giving viewers a candid glimpse at the real Liz, a rock star in the quilting world.

Segment 5 Meryl & Clint, Jodie & Mark

Join Jodie and Mark at the famed Northside Café. Remember that scene in the Bridges of Madison County movie? Well, it’s not quite the same with our pair, though Mark is most definitely a stand in for Clint Eastwood.
Mark and Jodie share their “quiltspiration.” As designers, they find quilt ideas everywhere they go:  sidewalks, the brickwork on buildings, even doorknobs. See the blocks they made from inspiration in their travels.

Segment 6: Favorite Books!

Jodie and Mark take a seat on the bench in the Fons & Porter Quilt Supply shop to share their five favorites books--not necessarily quilting.
