Add Texture with the Baby Lock Sashiko
Have you ever put your own spin on a pattern you loved? Take this adorable Asian-inspired dress for example. We love the original pattern from Modkid, by Patty Young, and thought it was a perfect candidate for some Sashiko stitching.  By adding decorative Sashiko stitching to some of the skirt panels, and the edges of the belt and ribbon, we gave an already adorable pattern a completely original twist!

Appliqué Tip

Pin appliqué elements to the background fabric from the back instead of the front. The thread will be less likely to catch on the pins as you stitch. Visit the tips page on the Fons & Porter Web site for more great ideas.

Original Sewing & Quilt Expo News

Quilters take notice: Frieda Anderson is coming to the Expo! Known for the quilts she creates with her dynamic and beautiful hand-dyed cottons and silks, Frieda brings her easy methods to Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Raleigh, NC June 21, 22 & 23. Frieda notes: “I have found that by fusing smaller pieces, I can work out design issues. Then I like to make a bigger, bolder statement and piece the same quilt in a large format. Most of my work is machine quilted and nature inspired.” Discover her “Friestyle” appliqué art or enjoy her Fun Freemotion Machine Quilting class.  Either way, your experience will be memorable!

Blocks a Go-Go! Shoo Fly Quilt Block
This block has no curves, but you wouldn’t know it. Mary takes on a Depression-era block called “Shoo Fly” and talks a little about seam allowances and how you mustn’t fear them. Matt The Intern made the demo Shoot Fly quilt block — it was his first quilt block ever!
