Why Knot?

Our next issue of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting, March/April 2011, will be on newsstands next week and features a great article by master quilter, Dawn Cavanaugh. Before you quilt your next quilt – let Dawn walk you through some simple, yet important steps that will help you avoid some of those unsightly lumps and bumps caused by knotting your thread. Or, if you're 'mitered corners' challenged, we've added the perfect step-by-step Sew Easy for you that will help make creating the featured 'Spot's Favorite Colors' quilt a snap (also, watch for an online video of this same Sew Easy). And, near and dear to Marianne's heart is another great project called, 'Under our Wings'. Check out the 'Trends' section for an update on this new Quilts of Valor program.

Something New Is In The Soup

For every quilt there is a fan and a foe. Some quilters remain unwavering traditionalists, while others love only contemporary, reproductions, scrappy, art, or maybe the intricate samplers. Others believe the true beauty in a quilt lies in the appliqué, embroidery, embellishment and beyond. Quilter's Home, our sister publication, is helping to introduce and define yet another soon-to-be favorite phenomenon simply dubbed “Modern.”  This new sensation is actually a blend of some of the old and new with a little “You” thrown in the mix. In further review, Modern is a venture toward simplicity which screams time saving – that's one big yeah for a lot of us quilters. Modern also has absolutely no rules, except for yours … Enter fun and creative expression. And, this new trend beckons the young and daring as well as the seasoned pro. We think it's worth checking into and a great way to start is with the 'Modern Quilting Primer', a Free eBook they introduced in their fun, new editors' blog. This Primer starts you off right with three free patterns that are all about 'The Something News' stirring in today's quilting world.

Sew & Tell

Red Green
submitted by Mary Mollander, Great Falls, MT

This is my completed Red and Green Sampler (pattern is the Noel Sampler that ran in the 2005 fall issues of Love of Quilting). I hand appliquéd and hand quilted this project, and used fabrics from a variety of sources. The quilt is scheduled to be shown in the Falls Quilt Guild Show coming up in April. Thank you for such a great design. I'm very proud of my completed quilt.

Teapots To The Rescue
submitted by Patricia Mitchell, Kansas City, MO

I knew I wanted to make the Christmas table topper I saw demonstrated on your TV show last fall. However, when I received the full instructions in the Nov/Dec 2010 issue of the Fons & Porter Love of Quilting magazine, I realized that the embroidered Christmas motif I had planned to use at first, would not fit the space, but the teapot designs I had would work well. I'm delighted with my year-round redwork topper!
