As the Temperatures Go Down, We're Stepping Up Our Pace

- Update on our Soldier's quilt project -

Sometimes there is no better incentive than the weather report. When we heard that temps in Afghanistan were dipping into the 20s at night (daytime highs are only in the 40s!), we reached out to a few generous helping hands. Several of our 29 flannel quilt tops are now in route to some wonderful volunteer 'long-armers'. Over the next couple weeks, we will introduce you to them and also keep you posted about the final production stages of 29 Quilts to Go. Follow us through Facebook http://www.facebook.com/FonsandPorter?ref=sgm and/or follow our blog at www.quiltersclubofamerica.com

If you, or someone you know would like to help other soldiers by quilting a gift from home, please check out the soldiersangels.org website for details. They are a non-profit with a goal of sending blankets to all service members in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are 190,000 so they could use all the help you can give!!

Sew and Tell
Is It Possible to Make a Handmade Quilt Even More Special?
submitted by Debbie Simmons, Flowery Branch, GA

My youngest son, Chris, is in the Navy. While stationed in Hawaii he met Mirjam. She is from Switzerland and was in Hawaii attending a language school. In July 2009, I went to Switzerland with my son to meet Mirjam and her family. When Susanne, Mirjam's mom, and I met, there was a language barrier. Susanne knows English, but, had not used it in many years. However, we soon discovered that we shared a common language, the language of crafting. There was an instant bond!

In the Bride's Colors
submitted by Nancy Doran, Sahuarity, AZ

I started quilting in 2008, and the Jinny Beyer pattern "Midnight Sun" (ran in Nov/Dec 2008 issue of Love of Quilting) was one of the first patterns I kept from your magazine, hoping I would someday feel confident enough to take on all those strips and points.  With the pending nuptials of my nephew urging me on to make a quilt in reds and browns (the bride's favorite colors), I came across the pattern again and decided to dive in and try.  There is a decided change in color variation, but I really enjoyed the end result!
